Mobiles have become an integral part of nearly every aspect of life. They’ve changed how we work, learn, play, and connect. And, since we own mobiles incessantly, we’re creating even more e-waste at breakneck speed. But the world simply hasn’t found a way to responsibly deal with the volume of waste that is being created. Sustainability requires a concerted effort from everyone, everywhere. It takes shifting thinking and better decision making – not just around what we do with our electronics, but also how we do it.

E-waste leaves behind a nasty impact — the almost 80 percent of e-waste that isn’t properly disposed of take years to biodegrade, often leaching unsafe chemicals landfills. And what’s more, mobile devices contain precious metals like silver and gold. If gone unchecked, over $60 million would go straight to the trash.

Continuously tossing old mobiles in the trash as opposed to properly recycling them leaves quite a bit of toxic waste in landfills and can lead to many harmful diseases in the region, as it releases toxic substances into the atmosphere.

Recovering Precious Metals

Reusing the precious metals and plastics in old cell phones alone instead of making or mining more of them would save as much energy as flipping off the power to 24,000 household for an entire year.
